How to De-Frizz a Synthetic Wig

Synthetic wigs need specific care to keep them frizz-free, flowing, and looking similar to natural hair. Over time, more often than not, the synthetic wig will develop static cling and frizz around the perimeter of the wig.  This can happen sooner the longer the wig is, from body heat, or just normal wear. Luckily we have ways to prolong the life of your wig!

We  offer hair care products that can be used with synthetic hair, but it is important to know all of the ways you can keep a natural look with synthetic hair.

Knowing how to defrizz a synthetic wig will increase the lifetime of your wig and keep those locks looking beautiful every time you wear it. Here’s how to do it…

Wash Your Wig

One simple way to defrizz a synthetic wig is to wash it. It’s a simple and effective way to add some much-needed moisture to remove fly-aways and restore some of its bounce. Sometimes the wig is just dirty.

When washing synthetic fibers, only use cold or lukewarm water. Never use hot water on synthetic hair.

  • To Wash Straight Synthetic Wigs: Wet the strands of the hair in a downward motion (do not rub as this will increase frizz and cause breakage) starting from the crown and working down to the ends. Apply shampoo, working it in using the same motion. Rinse completely and then repeat with the conditioner. Finally, use a towel to pat dry the hair, brush it out with a wig brush, and then allow it to air dry on a wig stand.
  • To Wash Curly Synthetic Wigs: You can use the above method, but you do not brush the hair.  Use a towel to pat dry the hair, use your fingers to comb it out if needed, and then allow it to air dry on a wig stand.

Use a Conditioning Spray

Most of our clients forget after washing to condition the wig. This is so important to replace the most needed moisture.

We recommend clients spray the nape of the wig after each wear then use fingers to run through. Just a light spray is sufficient. If you over spray the conditioner can build up.

Use a Dry Shampoo

Don’t have time to wash your wig and let it air-dry? Maybe you have hair loss and never leave home without your wig. Try dry shampoo!

To use this method, place the wig on a wig stand. Do not get too close to the top of the wig when spraying, as this can cause buildup of the dry shampoo. Spray the dry shampoo lightly over the hair shaft down to the ends. Next, use a wide-tooth comb or brush to remove tangles. For curly wigs, you may want to use your fingers.

After the dry shampoo spray has been applied, put a small amount of leave on conditioner on the ends of the hair to hold in moisture, keep it looking smooth, and to tame any leftover frizziness.

Accidentally sprayed too much? A brush through the hair and it should be able to clear up any mishaps.

If All Else Fails, Try a Hot Air Brush

Do not use this method on curly or wavy wigs (take to a professional). It’s often frowned upon to use heat on synthetic hair because of the chemistry of synthetic hair fibers. Heat, if too hot, can melt synthetic hair, leaving the wig even more frizzy. However, hot-air brushes have had some success.

To use a hot air brush on a synthetic wig, be sure that the brush is on its lowest setting. First, test a small inconspicuous area of the wig to check for damage or melting. If the wig smokes, melts, or if there is breakage, do not continue using this method. If all seems well, place the wig on a stand and spray it with a heat-protector. Next, move the brush down the wig slowly. This method will leave the hair looking soft and frizz-free.

When it comes to synthetic wigs, it’s best to know what you’re doing to avoid any hair mishaps. However, in some cases, a wig has simply reached the end of its life. If it no longer retains its style, it is dull, constantly getting tangled, and salon wig services aren’t of any help, then it’s probably time to get a new wig.
