13 Wig Care Myths That Could Be Damaging Your Wig: Let’s Debunk Them!

When it comes to wigs, wig care and maintenance are essential for keeping your investment looking beautiful and lasting longer. Unfortunately, there are many wig care myths that can lead to premature wear, tangling, or even damaging your wig. At Strut Hair Solutions, we’re here to help you separate fact from fiction and provide the proper wig care knowledge you need.

Let’s uncover 13 common wig care myths and reveal the truths behind them, ensuring you get the most out of your human hair wigs, synthetic wigs, or hair toppers.

Myth 1: Wigs Don’t Require Washing

The Truth: Even though wigs don’t produce natural oils like your scalp, they still collect dirt, sweat, and product buildup. For human hair wigs, washing every 8–10 wears keeps them looking fresh. For synthetic wigs, a wash every 15–20 wears will do the trick. Always use a wig-specific shampoo for best results.

Myth 2: Regular Hair Products Are Fine for Wigs

The Truth: Your favorite shampoo or hairspray might seem harmless, but they can damage the fibers of your wig, especially synthetic ones. To keep your wig fibers intact, always use products specifically designed for wigs, like wig shampoos, conditioners, and styling sprays.

Myth 3: Heat Styling Won’t Hurt a Wig

The Truth: While heat-friendly wigs and human hair wigs can handle styling with hot tools, most synthetic wigs will melt or become damaged under heat. Always check your wig label before using flat irons or curling wands.

Myth 4: Wigs Can Be Stored Anywhere

The Truth: Proper storage is crucial for keeping your wig looking its best. Use a wig stand or mannequin to maintain its shape, and avoid leaving your wig in direct sunlight or humid environments.

Myth 5: Sleeping in Your Wig Is Fine

The Truth: Sleeping in your wig can cause tangling, matting, and unnecessary wear and tear. If you want your wig to last longer, remove it before bedtime.

Myth 6: Brushing a Wig Is the Same as Brushing Natural Hair

The Truth: Wigs require extra care when brushing. Use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, and always start from the ends, working your way up to avoid tangling or shedding.

Myth 7: You Can Dye Any Wig

The Truth: Only human hair wigs can be dyed safely, and even then, it’s recommended to have them colored by a professional. Attempting to dye a synthetic wig can ruin it.

Myth 8: Synthetic Wigs Look Fake

The Truth: Thanks to advancements in wig technology, high-quality synthetic wigs can look incredibly natural. Many even come pre-styled, making them a low-maintenance option for anyone.

Myth 9: Wigs Are Uncomfortable

The Truth: Modern wigs are designed for comfort! Features like lightweight caps, lace fronts, and adjustable straps ensure a secure and comfortable fit for all-day wear.

Myth 10: Wigs Are Just for People With Hair Loss

The Truth: Wigs aren’t just for hair loss—they’re for anyone looking to switch up their style, protect their natural hair, or save time styling. Whether you’re interested in a new look or need a hairpiece for thinning hair, wigs are a versatile solution.

Myth 11: Synthetic Wigs Can’t Handle Heat

The Truth: While most synthetic wigs can’t tolerate heat, heat-friendly synthetic wigs can be styled with hot tools. Always read the care instructions on your wig.

Myth 12: Washing Wigs Too Often Damages Them

The Truth: Proper washing actually keeps wigs clean and fresh. Stick to a washing schedule that matches how often you wear your wig, and use wig-safe products to preserve its quality.

Myth 13: Wigs Are High-Maintenance

The Truth: Once you develop a simple wig care routine, maintaining your wig is easy. A little effort goes a long way in keeping your wig looking fabulous.

Breast Cancer Awareness Photo with Women in Pink and Pink flowers and ribbon in the background

As many of us have come to know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You may be thinking ‘who still hasn’t heard about breast cancer?’ Well while most of us have heard of or know someone that has been affected by this horrible disease yet there are still many facts that a lot of people don’t know of such as; breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally, with approximately 2.3 million new cases diagnosed each year according to the World Cancer Research Fund.

While the focus during this month is primarily on early detection and treatment, it’s also essential to shed light on the often-overlooked aspect of breast cancer: its impact on hair health.

One of the biggest reasons we focus on hair is, because for a lot of people their hair is  a fundamental aspect of their identity and self-esteem. For many individuals, and especially women hair loss can be emotionally distressing, affecting their self-confidence and body image. Breast cancer and its treatments can have a significant effect on a person’s hair. The most well-known side effect is hair loss, medically referred to as alopecia. There can be many factors as to why someone would lose their hair during their treatment, such as;

  • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a common treatment for breast cancer, but it affects not only cancer cells but also rapidly dividing healthy cells, including those responsible for hair growth. This can result in significant hair thinning or complete hair loss.
  • Hormone Therapy: Some breast cancer treatments, like hormone therapy, can lead to changes in hair texture and even hair thinning.
  • Stress: A breast cancer diagnosis and its treatment journey can be incredibly stressful. Stress is a known factor in hair loss, and it can exacerbate hair-thinning issues.

While the journey can be exhausting and strenuous there can be some glimmers of something fun. That’s where we hope to help you get there with hair!  Whether it’s helping someone choose a wig that makes you feel like the you of yesteryear or a brand new you. We love seeing a smile brought back to a client’s (new friend’s) face when they get to try on a wig and be whoever they choose to be. They’re no longer a ‘cancer patient’ ; they’re now ‘Mary with the fun bob cut’, or ‘Shannon with perfectly framed bangs!’ The feeling of restoring someone’s confidence is the reason we do what we do. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important time to educate, support, and honor those impacted by breast cancer. By understanding the effects of breast cancer treatments on hair health and the journey that individuals go through, we can empower them to face this challenge with greater confidence and resilience.

This October we’ll be showing our support, through education on our social platforms and by wearing our pink hair! As you show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, remember that the journey for individuals affected by breast cancer extends beyond October. Let’s continue to raise awareness, provide support, and advocate for better solutions for those facing this diagnosis. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors and fighters, one strand at a time. Wear pink hair and show you care.

Hair Loss and Hair Thinning during Pregnancy

I often hear clients in the studio talking about how thick their was during pregnancy and how after they stopped breast feeding they noticed it thinning out.  This usually levels back out after a bit of time but while you’re experiencing it this can be quite scary. You may be asking yourself will my hair ever come back the way it was? In this blog we will go over some of the changes you may experience and give you a heads up of what to expect and

During pregnancy your body experiences many hormonal changes. Some of these hormonal changes can affect your hair. Some women experience their hair becoming thicker and some women unfortunately experience their hair becoming thinner.

Hair thickening during pregnancy is due to high levels of hormone estrogen. This is typically experienced around 15 weeks of pregnancy. Each individual hair grows and resets for 2 to 3 months which then pushes out a new hair growing in that follicle. During pregnancy the hair stays longer in the follicle which slows hair shedding.

Hair thinning during pregnancy is due to the decrease in oestrogen. The decrease in oestrogen occurs when there is a hormonal imbalance, an abortion, misscarriage or stillbirth is experienced, or when the oral contraceptive pill is no longer taken. Hair loss during pregnancy is not uncommon and is experienced between 40 to 50% of women. Hair loss of course can be a difficult symptom during pregnancy but fortunately like most symptoms during pregnancy it is temporary. In the meantime there are a few options to help your hair from thinning and this is where we can help.

Here are some tips and suggestions to try:

  • Visiting with an expert at STRUT Hair Solutions about the types of products such as wigs, hair toppers, hair pieces and extensions that are available can help you recover with confidence overnight. STRUT is dedicated to helping women who are experiencing hair loss. We are committed to doing our small part to help you regain your confidence!

  • Topical solutions such as thickening serums can help improve hair appearance. Such as our hero product Unveil No. 3 Hair thickening serum to help produce a fuller, thicker head of hair. Unveil’s Thicker Hair Serum is easy to use and is only to be applied to your scalp once a day and you’ll see results in as little as 4 weeks. Benefits with Unveil products is that they are restorative. Meaning the ingredients we use are non-toxic, have no known carcinogens, gluten free, and vegan (no-animal products)! The active ingredients are plant based and use apple stem cell cultures which make it safe to use during pregnancy. Visit unveilhaircare.com

  • Avoiding tight and restrictive hair styles such as ponytails, braids, pigtails, hair rollers and other styles that can pull and stress your hair should all be avoided in order to keep hair from thinning.

  • Reducing the use of heat damaging tools such as hair curlers, straighteners and blow dryers. Hot tools can cause breakage and dryness which can damage hair appearance. Not using them is a great solution to help keep your hair from experiencing more unnecessary damage.

  • Make sure to keep up a healthy diet which contains the essential nutrients. A healthy diet means a healthy body.

Summary:

Many people believe that when a woman is pregnant she is the most beautiful. It can be hard to feel this way when pregnant because of all of the changes and emotions your body is experiencing. Remember that some of these changes, such as hair loss during pregnancy, are not always permanent. Also remember that there are solutions to help boost your confidence such as visiting Strut Hair Solutions

Most importantly, remember to be kind to your body during pregnancy and the changes you undergo are all part of becoming a mother.

Tips to Choose the Right Wig

Choosing the right wig that compliments your style can be difficult. There’s a reason clients contact Strut Hair Solutions for a Discovery Session. This guide will give you a detailed look on various wig types and wig styles, while making recommendations on how to choose a wig.

How to Wear Wigs and Make them Look Real

Perhaps you know exactly which wig you desire, but you’re not so sure how to wear it so that it looks natural. I want to share some tips and tricks that will make your wig look like it’s growing out of your own scalp, so you can look and feel confident!

Human Hair Wigs verses Synthetic Wigs. Which are best?

Human Hair Wigs verses Synthetic Wigs, which one is the best choice for you?

Shopping online or in a store we always look at prices. The cheaper the better we always think, because we are saving money. Is cheaper really always better just to save a few extra dollars? You can be the judge of that as we describe what makes the best natural wigs below.

Ever wonder the big difference between the best human hair wig verses a synthetic wig? Yes price is a factor but there’s more to it then just the price tag.

SYNTHETIC AND HUMAN HAIR MACHINE MADE WIGS

Synthetic and Human hair machine made wigs are what most people identify wigs to be like and tend to be the most common.  As you can see in the picture above wefts of hair are sewn together by a machine to create the over all look of the wig. Machine made wigs tend to be less expensive because they can be mass produced quickly. Synthetic and Human hair machine made wigs tend to have more volume  and lift due to the thickness of the cap.  These can look very realistic when the hair falls in the way its sewn. Due to the way machine made’s are sewn the top or scalp portion of the wig tends to look ratted and unrealistic.  I would not recommend a machine made synthetic or human hair wig for a person with a sensitive scalp or is irritable to certain materials. Over all synthetic and human hair machine made wigs are great for someone who is on a budget and likes volume in their hair!

Pros:
More volume, more lift, more hair!
Least expensive
Can look realistic

Cons:
Thicker, heavier cap construction
Can be itchy or uncomfortable to sensitive scalps.
Cap construction can be more hot and bulky.
Unrealistic looking scalp

100% HAND TIED SYNTHETIC AND HUMAN HAIR WIGS

The idea of wigs being hot, heavy and uncomfortable is true but wigs are not all made the same. Depending on the wig cap can determine the comparability and flexibility of each wig. 100% hand tied synthetic and human hair wigs weigh less then 2 ounces in weight, leaving you feeling light and comfortable. In the picture above you can see that the cap is constructed very differently from a machine made wig. The 100% hand tied synthetic and human hair wigs have each fiber or hair individually hand sewn into the soft mesh cap.  This technique recreates the movement of the way our natural hair moves and lays. Unlike machine made’s 100% hand tied cap’s have a very natural looking scalp giving the illusion of real hair. This type of cap gives you the option to change your part and customize your wig even more to how you like to wear your hair. The caps are fitted and lay smoothly against your head which makes it feel like there is nothing is on your head. Wigs with realistic scalp appearances really tie your whole look together and make your hair look thick, yet real. Overall 100% hand tied synthetic and human hair wigs are more expensive but can you put a price tag on comfortability, natural looking, light weight and happiness?

Pros:
Light weight and comfortable
Natural looking, moves the way natural hair does
Soft, fitted, comfortable cap construction
Natural looking scalp making it easy to part.

Cons:
Not a lot of volume
More expensive
Not a ton of hair
