An Insider’s Guide to Wig Care

You have a lot of options when it comes to styling your human or synthetic wig. There are also many ways to go about achieving your desired look. I’m going to share from my experience after 15 years of working with wigs and hair extensions my best practices for protecting your investment and feeling like your hair addition has become a part of you. Most of the tips I’m going to share with you, could be done at home yourself. However, we offer all of these services in studio if you’re unsure or just would like us to do it.
Can Wigs Get Wet?
YES, cool water will not hurt your wig. Now, with synthetic hair the style is “baked in” and once it dries will the hair will go right back to its original shape. With human hair wigs, you will need to reset the style after the hair gets wet. However, once you style your human hair wig the style should stay until you wash it (assuming your washing your wig weekly as we recommend with daily wear) or get the hair wet.
Can Wigs Be Washed?
YES, we advise our clients to wash their wig every 7 to 10 times they wear it. This applies to human or synthetic I always say, you can tell when they need washing. For one, they lose their shape, the color can look dull and make-up can accumulate around the hair line of the wig. Now, if you only wear your wig once in a while, then for you maybe only wash it every few weeks or monthly.
Can Wigs Be Dyed?
YES, human hair wigs, the color can be deposited. Low lights can be added easily for depth or adding rooting at the crown. We do not recommend lightening the wigs as the color does not light evenly or not at all. Synthetic wigs cannot be colored as they have no cuticle.
Can Wigs Be Styled?
YES, on human hair wigs heat tools (curling irons and flat irons) can be used on medium heat. Synthetic HD fiber (heat defiant fiber) can take medium heat as well. Just be sure to let the style cool and set to stay.
Can Wigs Be Curled?
YES, human hair wigs can be curled with a curling or straight iron. Synthetic hair the curl is baked in, so when you wash the hair the curl pattern comes back.
Can Wigs Be Put in Ponytails?
YES, low ponytails are fine or even a ½ pony is fine. In synthetic hair the pony tail could make an indent (cold set) in the hair, which we can steam out for you should that happen.
